According to the American Camp Association, a camp experience enriches lives and changes the world. We couldn’t agree more. Here are our top five reasons kids need camp:
DEVELOP INDEPENDENCE, CONFIDENCE, & SELF-ESTEEM
Summer camp provides a safe space for kids to step out of their comfort zone, explore, and gain a stronger sense of self. One of the goals as parents is to help our children grow up and learn to become independent. As children try new things and develop and hone their skills, their confidence grows. Feeling capable, in turn, helps children feel better about themselves and in turn increases their self-esteem.
LEARN LIFE SKILLS
Although school is very important, the knowledge gained there aren’t the only skills kids need to succeed. Communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialization, and being solutions-orientated are crucial skills to learn. And camp is a perfect place to gain this exposure.
MAKE NEW & DIFFERENT FRIENDS
Children often attend school with the same peer groups, year after year, which could be great or horrible, depending on the child’s perceived reputation. At camp, kids get to meet a whole other group of people. Camp provides the chance for children to reinvent themselves at camp to be who they truly want to be.
KEEPS THEM BUSY & UNPLUGGED
Many parents have to work and don’t want their children sitting around bored, on electronics, or getting into trouble. Kids get to take a break from technology, build social interaction skills, make new friends, and try new things. At camp, children grow, explore and learn about themselves and the people and world around them, and they have fun throughout the entire process. And parents can have peace of mind knowing that their children are having fun in a safe environment.
GIVES KIDS A SENSE OF PURPOSE
Children who attend camp make significant connections with their camp community. Participating in group and team activities is just the tip of the iceberg. Camp provides children with a sense of purpose. A feeling of being a part of a group that is bigger than the sum of its parts. Having a sense of belonging has so many benefits, most of all eliminating the sense of loneliness or feelings that they don’t fit in.
