In winter or at water temperatures below 12 degrees (54°F), Koi rarely appear at the water surface and search for food at the bottom. Therefore, in winter, it is recommended to always feed sinking food. The metabolism of the cold-blooded Koi slows down considerably at low temperatures. Therefore, in this period the animals need a food that is characterized by high bioavailability.

The essential, highly unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids [Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] included in the food provide energy and protect cell membranes.
